“My teacher told me to paint an orange, so I painted a fucking goat cause I was a rebel. I failed art.”

Alison Narro takes fancy photos for fancy people and is a connoisseur of Jean Claude Van Damme gifs. Ask her about kittens and laser beams.

Tell us about your path to becoming a photographer.
When I was 11 years old my dad gave me his old Minolta film camera. So I began the amazing journey of taking a lots of out of focus and really underexposed photos. Took tons of flower photos, wall photos, and my artistic phase "look at this trash - it's artsy." Then when I was about 22, I spent my life savings on a digital camera (which was a whole whopping $2K). I even had to bounce a check for Chinese take out cause I spent all my money on that camera, NOT even good Chinese take out. Worst orange chicken ever.

Who or what inspires you?
My family inspires me, the fact that my mom stood by my side as I drew all over the walls for so many years. And then hung my ugly art and was just so proud of me - that inspires me. I really wouldn't be where I am without my family, they're so proud of all of my accomplishments. The fact that they stuck by me through all my phases (oh god - my goth days) inspires me everyday.

Were you creative as a kid?

I was always in art classes and drawing as a child. I was always interested in some form of art. My teacher told me to paint an orange, so I painted a fucking goat cause I was a rebel. I failed art. But eventually I started taking dark room classes and art classes in high school. Shockingly, I got my letterman jacket in art, photography...and golf. But to be fair, I was terrible at golf, the coach would yell at me because I wouldn't wear shoes when playing golf.

What do you like about living in Austin
?
I do really love Austin, it's a great city full of creative people. To be surrounded by so much talent is inspiring. It makes you have to challenge and push yourself all the time. The city has so much to offer: food, friends, awesome swimming holes, more food... Did I mention food?

What is your typical day like?

Most mornings start with coffee and taking my dog Biscuit for a walk in the neighborhood. If I don't have a shoot or if I'm not prepping for a shoot, I'm editing in my little dungeon at Guerilla Suit.

What's your favorite food?

Tacos.
